Mohammed's Story

Mohammed's dad, Unisa, was frequently faced with a horrific choice – to buy medicine for his sick child or feed the rest of his family.

The well from which the family had to collect drinking water was rife with waterborne diseases and led to them falling ill with diarrhoea, cholera and dysentery.

Thankfully Sport Relief cash supports a local project that works with the slum's inhabitants to build new wells and ensure they're hygienic and chlorinated.

Mohammed and his family now have clean water on their doorstep."The water is safe and no one gets diarrhoea.” he says.

Sally & John's Story

After fifty years together, any dreams that Sally (70) and John (74) had of sharing a happy, active retirement have been shattered.

Now diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's, Sally needs John's help with even the simplest of tasks.

Thankfully, because of your Sport Relief donations and fundraising, we're able to fund The Alzheimer's Society who given Sally and John the vital support they need.

They regularly meet friends at The Alzheimer's Society Club to take part in activities and games that help keep their minds active.

John says, "It's been great knowing that you’re not alone."

Over 60 BT workers from across the North East staffed the phone lines at the BT Newcastle Contact Centre taking a massive £73,000 worth of donations for Sport Relief 2010.

Volunteers worked from 7pm until late into the night handling a massive 2500 calls.

The Gosforth  contact centre staff also raised money to donate to Sport Relief with activities ranging from a cake sale to a cycle-a-thon which involved advisors, managers, trainers and even centre managers cycling 326 km in just 12 hours on a static bike - phew!  The staff on site raised a fantastic £1600 in total!

More than 130 volunteers from GHA gathered to play their part in one of the UK's biggest fundraising drives all wearing t-shirts emblazoned with  'We're rising to the challenge'.

And rise to the challenge we did. Some donned red wigs, some had sprayed their hair green, others came in fancy dress. We all wore a smile on our faces.

"I'm having a great time," said Cass Hendry, a housing officer from Keystone. We took calls from the length and breadth of the UK and from as far away as Spain, Switzerland and even Jamaica. But it was far from all hard work and no play. At midnight the whistle blew and it was all over - bar the counting.

The grand total taken in by GHA staff over five hours was £94,519. Another £400 was raised from the staff raffle. Alex McGuire, Acting Director of Housing and Customer Services said. "It's been a real buzz. And if we do it again I want to be a call handler." "There's no ifs," said General Manager Mags Lightbody. "WHEN we do it again."

This is the second time Skandia UK has hosted a donation call centre for Comic Relief.  We had more than 70 volunteers from across the business that supported the evening and helped us take more calls than last year.

Everyone had a fantastic time and are keen to support next year.  Here is what some of our team had to say about taking part.

 "I had a blast."

 "Great night and amazing organisation."

"I had a great night answering the phones. I was quite nervous to start with but soon got into the swing of it."

"A great opportunity to do something a bit different and meet new people from across Skandia."
